Review: Göteborgs Rapé Large White

Göteborgs Rapé is one of the most popular brands of snus in Sweden. It goes back a long time, to Swedish sailors mixing up and exchanging their snus blends in the ports. They used to say a sailor’s mood was only as good as his snus! This snus is an interesting one to me. When I started in 2009, I didn’t like it. Flash forward to 2013, for some reason, I fell in love with it. Since then, I’ve used it every single day. To me, it’s a different, unique type of snus flavor. It’s one you can use all day to mix your rotation up, and never tire of it. So, what is it that makes this snus so popular? Well, let me tell you how good it is, and why I love it so much. Let’s get into the review and talk about GR!

This one has the catch lid on top, revealing the compartment for depositing your used portions if you aren’t near a trash receptacle. The flavor description on this one says, “The GR´ flavor of juniper berry and lavender has become a signature flavor for snus, and Göteborgs Rapé White Portion still is the most popular snus in Sweden today. Göteborgs Rapé White Portion has hints of oak and citrus and is a low drip snus due to the white portion format”. Each can weighs 21.6 and has 24 portions, for 0.9g each. The nicotine content sits at 8mg/g, but with the 0.9g portions that’s 7.2mg/portion. Right at the regular strength level! 

Opening the can, the aroma that comes through is a nice, present aroma of juniper. It has a subtle herbal note to it, along with a light floral presence. There’s a little dash of lemon in the mix, too. The portions are soft to the touch, but need a little fluffing due to the wedge shape of the Star Formation in the can. Under the lip, they feel great. The flavor profile of this one is quite unique, and tasty. The juniper is front and center, and has a light citrus behind it. The herbal/floral notes serve as nice compliments to the juniper flavor profile. It’s a very well rounded, enjoyable taste. The nicotine strength on this one is comfortable at the regular strength level, and very satisfying. The flavor lasts a good hour!

The Bottom Line

If you’ve never had this snus before, it’s a must try for any enthusiast of Swedish Snus. One reason is it’s a big part of the history of the snus industry. But, another one is that it tastes fantastic. It’s great for a main snus, but it’s also great for one to mix up your rotation. I’ve used it for a decade and never tire of it, that should tell you something.
