Review: Jakobsson’s Wintergreen Original Portion
People often ask me what the best wintergreen snus on the market is. My answer is usually this one, Gotlandssnus Jakobsson’s Wintergreen Original Portion. It’s not like there’s a lot of wintergreen flavored products out there, but this is the one I’d say is the better one of the options out there. If you’ve never had it before, we’re going to sit down and do a full review of this one and talk about what makes this one so good!
If you’ve had this one before, you may notice that Swedish Match has recently changed it to a gold can. Also, when you open the catch lid on top you’ll see the compass that used to be in each can is now gone. Perhaps a cost cutting measure by Swedish Match. The flavor description for this snus says, “a minty wintergreen flavor over a well-rounded tobacco blend”. The cans weigh in at 20 grams and have 20 portions per can which sits at 1 gram each. The nicotine contents sits at 10mg/g, and with the 1 gram portions that’s easily 10mg/portion.
When you open the can, the aroma that comes through is unmistakable wintergreen. It’s that familiar, slightly sweet, minty, American wintergreen smell. The portions are nice and plump and have a great moisture amount. Under the lip they’re super soft, and have a quick flavor release. The flavor is that classic, straight up taste of wintergreen. It’s bold, it’s present, but it’s pretty well balanced with a minty character and a little tobacco. It is on the sweeter end, but for this one it’s not too much. In the nicotine strength, it’s about regular, but maybe a hair above. It’s not too much, but not too little. The flavor lasts a solid 40-45 minutes, on average.
The Bottom Line
If you’re new to snus, or just looking for a wintergreen snus to try, look no further. You found it. In my opinion, this is the best wintergreen snus on the market. There’s also a slim white portion version if you don’t like a drip, or want a longer lasting flavor. But of the two, this is the best one, in my opinion. And, great for folks who are coming over from the world of American dip and wanting to try out snus!
