Göteborgs Rapé is a Swedish snus brand manufactured by Swedish Match that has a history that goes all the way back to 1919, and that has its roots in the early 20th century Gothenburg. In Göteborgs Rapés selection you’ll find traditional flavored snus with mild and light tobacco blends topped with tones of lavender and juniper.
Gothenburg got its city privilege in 1621 by King Gustaf II Adolf and has since then been one of Sweden’s most important trade center and port to the world. With its strategic location on the Swedish west coast, Gothenburg was often the first place where imported merchandise, spices as well as new ideas from around the world arrived coming to Sweden. This access to new goods and aromas brought a curiosity and will to experiment, something that also found its way to the snus industry. In Göteborgs Rapé’s case it resulted in a well-round, light and nuanced tobacco blend that really stood out from rivaling brands with their more spicy and robust flavor profiles.
The brand name consists of two parts. The first part “Göteborgs” is Swedish for “Gothenburg’s” and the second part, “Rapé”, is of French origin and it means grated. The tobacco used in Swedish snus is grounded and not grated, so exactly why the word rapé was used we don’t know. But we can speculate that it gave the snus an international touch and an exclusive image that reflected the high-quality of the snus from Göteborgs Rapé.
Today the snus from Göteborgs Rapé are available in most types: Loose snus, Original Portion, White Portion and White Mini Portion. You can choose between different flavors such as cloudberry, lingonberries and of course Göteborgs Rapé traditional snus flavor of light tobacco topped with tones of lavender, juniper, cedar and citrus.
