Snubie’s Snus Storage and Refrigeration Tips

Snubie’s Snus Storage and Refrigeration Tips

There’s a lot of info out there about how to store your snus.  Or, what to do with open cans.  I have a general way I do it that I’ve done over the past 14 years, and today I wanted to sit down and offer some tips on what I do, and what I’ve noticed about snus storage, refrigeration, freezing, quality control, and all that good stuff!

First, once a can is open, I find it’s best to use it.  If you open a can and take it in and out of cold storage, I find the quality can degrade.  The portions can dry out, and the moisture levels will get all out of whack.  So, once a can is open, I find it best to use it.  It won’t be the end of the world if you refrigerate or freeze it after you open it, but you won’t have the best quality in your snus.

There’s two general rules of thumb:  if you’ll use it by the expiration date, refrigerate it.  If you won’t, freeze it.  Refrigerating your snus keeps it fresh.  Usually, your refrigerator (or mini fridge) should sit between 33 and 38°F.  For our Celsius friends, that’s 0.55 C to 3.33 C.  I do this for all snus I’m going to use by the time it is set to expire.

If you aren’t going to use it by the expiration date, freeze it.  My freezer sits right at 0°F.  For our celsius friends, that’s -17.77 degrees C.  Now, you can just put it in a bag and toss it into your freezer.  Nothing wrong with that.  However, if you plan to store it longer than a year in the freezer, I suggest vacuum sealing it.  You can use any basic vacuum sealed kit and bags to do that.  I store snus in the freezer for quite a while, in fact I have some in my freezer that is almost 10 years old.  Granted, it won’t be exactly as good as it was when you first froze it, but it’s still usable.  I have a can of Snubie Brandy Alexander open right now from 6 years ago that tastes great.

The Bottom Line

So in general, remember these rules:

1.      Once a can of snus is open, try to use it up.

2.     If you will use it by the expiration date, refrigerate it.

3.     If you won’t use it by the expiration date, freeze it.

4.     Don’t take snus in and out of cold storage.

I hope this helps!  In general, i’ve found this is the best way to store snus for short term, and for long term usage.
