Review: General Mackmyra Original Portion
When you think of General Snus, often the flavor you’ll think of is the traditional, bergamot flavor. However, there are other flavors in the General family such as mint and this one: whisky. Today we’re going to sit down with General Mackmyra Original Portion. This snus is a collaboration between Swedish Match and Mackmyra, a whisky-maker in Sweden. Mackmyra is very highly rated amongst whisky consumers, and this one uses their popular Svensk Ek whisky. There aren’t a lot of whisky snus products out there, in fact only two lines still exist today: Mackmyra and Islay Whisky Snus. If you haven’t had this one before, let’s check it out!
The flavor description for this one says, “A General Snus for the whisky connoisseur! These original portions have dark tobacco characters and flavors that is topped with tones of Mackmyra Whisky”. On top of the can you’ll locate the catch lid, which is a place you can use to discard of your used portions if you aren’t near a trash bin. Each can weighs 24g and has 22 portions, which means these are bigger than most portions out there: 1.09g each! The nicotine content is 9.63mg/g, and with the bigger portions that goes up to 10.5mg/portion!
Opening the can, I notice an aroma of tar, oak, dark tobacco, and whisky. It’s slightly smoky, as well. The portions are quite lovely. These are moist, and super plump. They feel great under the lip and have a quick flavor release to them. In the flavor, I pick up a nice taste of whisky right off the bat. There’s some smokiness in the mix, along with wood notes that remind me of oak. It’s slightly smoky, and has a little tar presence to it. It’s a pretty well rounded, complex, deep flavor. In the nicotine strength, this one feels a little above regular strength, but it’s not too strong or anything. It has a nice release of the nicotine, and it isn’t too much or too little. The flavor lasts a good 45-50 minutes, on average.
The Bottom Line
I’m not someone who drinks whisky, but I enjoy this snus. Granted, I’m more partial to Islay Whisky Snus myself, but this is a good snus. I think this one has more whisky taste to it than Islay, so if you’re looking for a snus that actually tastes like whisky, you’ll be happy with this one. They also make a loose version of this one, which is quite tasty and enjoyable. And of course, if you’re someone like me who doesn’t drink whisky, you can still enjoy the taste of this snus!
